October is Photography Month at OCAG.
From the Ocean County Artist Guild’s Photo Group is the news that the annual photography exhibition, Exposures 2024 will have its opening reception on Saturday evening, October 5th from 6-8pm. We expect a full house with three of our galleries being full of work. The exhibition is juried with cash prizes in 5 categories, Portraits, Still Life, Landscape, Wildlife, and Abstract, and a prize for Best In Show.
This year the Juror is Eric Levin, formerly the Special Projects Editor at People magazine before becoming the Deputy Editor of New Jersey Monthly magazine. He is an accomplished Fine Art photographer whose work has been in numerous exhibitions since the 1960’s. The Guild is excited to have him as the juror of this year’s exhibition.
The exhibit this year is co-chaired by Dan Epstein who has been a working photographer since 1976. Prior to coming to OCAG he was for several years a trustee at Studio Montclair, Inc, a national fine arts organization based in Montclair, NJ, where he continues to coordinate and moderate artist critique groups, and also formerly Vice-President of The American Society of Magazine Photographers. Professionally, he primarily photographs people and food; his work has appeared in advertising and countless national magazines. He has exhibited his personal work since 1988. Also co-chairing the exhibit is Robert McKay, who, along with his wife and partner Elisabeth Koch-McKay, owns and operates McKay Imaging Photography, a photo studio in Red Bank, New Jersey. Since they began some 30 years ago, Robert has co-chaired art shows, directed a film festival, entered and juried many photography shows, served on a curating committee, and an advisory committee for arts organizations, all in addition to hosting over 40 exhibits in their Red Bank studio space. As an artistic outlet for himself, he enjoys photographing what he sees… with his iPhone.
The exhibition runs for the month of October, until the 27th. In addition to the exhibit, the public is invited on Wednesday, October 9th, from 7 to 9pm, to the monthly meeting of the OCAG Photo Group will host an evening with Phil Cantor. A professional photographer for decades, he will be sharing one of his personal projects, “Alter Egos”. For the last two years, using a 70 year-old Rolleiflex film camera, Cantor has been photographing people with alter egos. It’s genesis came when he happened upon a Civil War re-enactment at Ringwood Manor and became fascinated by people who found community with other people who shared a common interest in an uncommon culture. Cantor has made evocative portraits of war re-enactors of different eras, superheroes at ComicCon, Mummers, professional wrestlers, participants at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, and more. It’s a celebration of each participant while they are engaged with a community of like-minded alter egos.“There is a joy”, he says, “in meeting these people”.
